Duvel, one of the most famous Belgian beers, is traditionally brewed with two hop varieties.

But since 2007, the brewery has created a special edition, in which they add a third hop, called Duvel Tripel Hop.

Every year this third hop is different. The brewery has used some interesting hops such as Amarillo, Citra, Sorachi Ace and Mosaic. This year the chosen one is the American hop Equinox.

This addition gives the beer’s aroma some citrus notes such as lemon and grapefruit.

Hedwig Neven, Duvel’s brewmaster in charge of the new brew says: ‘We wish that the character of Equinox hop over subtly noticeable. We achieve this by adding hops again after the main fermentation, which we call dry-hopping. This keeps the pronounced fruity character pervasive presence in the final beer.’

Another sensible difference, if compared to the regular Duvel, this new recipe is stronger: the alcohol level went up to 9.5%, against 8,5% from the traditional recipe.
